When can I move in?

Move in day for 2024 is Saturday 17th of February

If I have selected a twin room, can I have a preference for someone to room with me?

Yes! Let us know and we can look for that application assuming that the person you wish to room with has been offered a place at Victoria House also. We will need an email from them confirming this also. As part of our process we usually do not have residents in a relationship room together.

I am under 18 years of age. Does this matter?

No, not in terms of your application. However, if you are under 18 for the entire first trimester, you will be allocated an alcohol free area.

What communal areas do we have?

We have a few different types of communal areas here at Victoria House!

One thing that differs for us compared to other halls, is that we don’t have common rooms on every floor. Because of the smaller size of our hall and the nature of our buildings, we have common rooms per building. Residents are not limited by which building they live in, in terms of which common rooms they can use. We spend a lot of time in Orientation Week hosting events in different common areas to ensure that residents feel comfortable in all areas of the hall.

  • Some of the different communal areas we have available include:
    -A games room

-A Projects Room for our crafty students
    -A TV Lounge
    -2 x Study Lounges
    -2 smaller, general common areas
    -A Music Room

What does 24 hour support mean?

For Victoria House, 24 hour support means that there is always someone awake to respond to any issue you have as a resident.

We have a duty phone that operates as the central point of accessing this support.

From 9:00am-5:00pm our Administrator will be holding the phone
From 5:00pm-10:30pm our Residential Assistants will be holding the phone
From 10:30pm-9:00am we have an overnight staff member holding the phone and keeping an active eye on hall activity.

Can you cater to my specific dietary needs?

Our Catering team work really hard to ensure our menu is suitable for everyone’s dietary requirements.

Please make sure to declare your dietary requirements during the application process!

If you have something specific that you are concerned about, please get in touch with us and we can see what we can sort out. Our Catering Manager is happy to meet with you prior to Move In and discuss any needs you may have!

Do we have gender specific floors?

Currently we do not have any floors set up specifically by gender, however this doesn’t mean that we cannot arrange for that if we need to!

If you have particular needs or requirements in terms of floor allocation, you can let us know through a few mechanisms:

1) Let us know in your Application

2) After you accept your Offer, we send you a room allocation form in order to get to know you a bit better. You can declare these kinds of needs via this form!

How will I know which specific room I will get?

Room placement will be finalised when you move in.

What happens to my room during the Mid-Trimester and Mid-Year holidays?

Your room is yours for the duration of the academic year (check the dates on your Contract!).

You can choose to stay at the hall during the holidays or head home. Regardless, you can keep all of your belongings in your room, no one else will be staying there and no one else will have access to it!

Can I change the room type that I am offered?

Let us know and we will see what we can do based on availability.

How do I get an extension for my offer?

We can discuss an extension if you contact our office. This also includes if you’d like to extend the payment of your deposit.

How do I pay for my accommodation fees?

Information will be outlined in the offer. In general terms there are 3 options:

  1. Pay for the full term in 1 instalment.

  2. Pay in 2 instalments.

  3. Pay in 4 instalments.

We are happy to discuss an alternative payment plan that may better suit you. We’re also happy to discuss earlier payments before your first payment on the 3rd of February 2023.

What happens if I want to withdraw from the hall during the year?

All contracts are fixed term contracts. This means you are liable for your fees from the start date to the end date of your contract. There is a Release of Contract process for specific situations that are considered. Please come to the office and discuss your situation.

Does Student Loan/Allowance cover all your accommodation fees?

No. You will be entitled to Living Costs but this will not be enough to cover the full fees. Look at the Studylink website below for more information. It is advisable you apply early: https://www.studylink.govt.nz/.
